image (2)Toddlers love to look at pictures of themselves and their family.  This little photo album has space for 7 pictures, a pocket on the back for little treasures and a handle to carry it around.

You need four different fabrics2013-12-07 11.13.53

4 rectangles 13 1/2″ X 9″, each from a different fabric- pages

9″ X 10″ – back pocket

9″ X 7″  -back pocket flap

2″ X 8″- handle

3 pieces of clear vinyl 12 1/2″ X 8″

1 piece of clear vinyl 8″ X 5 1/2″

tissue paper

Layer the page rectangles, wrong sides together.  Using a decorative stitch or zigzag, stitch around the edges of the page rectangles.

Center the vinyl rectangles on the fabric page rectangles and tape in place with masking tape.  Run a line of masking tape down the center of the page for reference when you sew the photo pocket.  You only need the masking tape down the center on one side, and sew on that side. One piece of vinyl on each side.  The page rectangle that will be the cover only gets the small piece of vinyl on one side- the pocket will go on the other side.

If you find the vinyl sticks to your sewing machine, you can put a layer of tissue paper on the bottom as you sew.  Sewing 1/4″ to 3/4″ away from the masking tape, stitch a big U on each side for the photo pockets, backstitching on the ends.

2013-12-09 13.07.21        2013-12-09 13.08.11

Remove the tape and trim the vinyl to 1/8″ to 1/4″ away from the stitching lines, and across the top of the pocket.

2013-12-07 13.56.13

Fold the back pocket pieces in half wrong sides together.  Fold them so they remain 9″ wide.  The pocket will be 9″ X 5″ and the flap will be 9″ X 3 1/2″.  Sew the short ends together, turn and press.  (All seam allowances are 1/4″.)  Sew the handle and turn it.  If you don’t have a nifty tool to turn the handle, you might just sew it flat as in the Tapestry Bag.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Fold the top, open edge of the pocket pieces to one side,  1/4″ inch and press.  Sew a piece of Velcro to the folded edge of the pocket pieces; the Velcro goes on the wrong side of the flap piece, and the right side of the pocket piece.

Pin the pocket piece to the back cover, the pressed side on the outside edge.  Stitch around the edges, backstitching on the ends.

Layer all the pages and stitch down the center.

Position the handle and pocket flap with the pressed edge just along the center line of stitching and  pin.

Sew along the top of the pocket flap, over the previous line, backstitching at the handles.

Fill with photos and a few little books, a kazoo, or cars in the back pocket.

  1. My grand kids would spend many hours with this. It’s nice for them to see actual physical pictures, not just ones on their computers and phones.

  2. Love this idea. We have a new granddaughter and this would be great. Thanks for the tutorial. It looks like it wouldn’t be too hard to make.

  3. My three year old grandson spends quite a bit of time paging through the photos on my phone…stopping at the ones that include him, of course. This looks great, thank you!
